RAW HIDE AND ITS DEFECTS  

Traditionally, the leather industry covers a host of activities ranging from raw-hide to manufactured articles such as shoes, gloves and leather goods and including the transformation sectors, the tannery and the processing of small skins principally, goat and sheep.Raw hide is obtained after flaying in the abattoir and curing. At this stage, it often shows deterioration or defects, which will affect the quality of the finished leather.These defects can be classified in the following way : on the living animal (of a mechanical, sanitary, parasitic or genetic origin), caused during flaying, caused during curing.Each defect is presented on a card with the following informations :

• the animal concerned,
• the cause,
• the consequence with regard to the appearance of the skin or leather,
• solutions to reduce or eliminate the fault at the source.

• 1. of a mechanical origin
• 2. of a sanitary origin
• 3. of a parasitic origin
  • 3.1. arthropods (insects, mites)
  • 3.2. micro-organisms (fungi, bacterium)

Defects which can arise in the abattoir

• 1. Due to the use of knives
• 2. Mechanical operations

Curing defects

• 1. Due to salting
• 2. Due to drying
